The growth mindset is one of the most powerful ways to transform your life. It’s the belief that—no matter what we think we know or how good we already are at something—we can always get better at it through hard work and dedication. When you embrace a growth mindset, you understand that challenges are opportunities for learning, taking risks, and giving your best no matter what happens. So if you want to change how you see yourself and what you think is possible in this world, start by changing your beliefs about success!
The difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset is that a growth mindset focuses on getting better, while a fixed mindset tends to focus on being good at something. In the former, you don’t become “smart,” but you can become smarter. In the latter, you are born smart or talented—you have it or you don’t.
For example:
The simple fact is, that you can’t be afraid of failure or criticism. You have to believe that you can learn new things, improve your skills and capabilities, and do things you didn’t think were possible. You need to believe that if you set your mind to something, it will be achieved. And when it comes down to it, choosing a growth mindset means believing in yourself—it means trusting yourself enough to know what is best for yourself and not relying on others’ opinions or ideas as the end-all-be-all of how things should be done.
A fixed mindset is a belief that your qualities are carved in stone. It’s the belief that you are born with the amount of talent you have, and if you fail at something, it means that you don’t have what it takes to succeed.
When people think this way they tend to give up easily because they think they’re not good enough or smart enough. They also don’t try new things because they may fail, which would mean that their ability isn’t as great as they thought it was.
The growth mindset on the other hand believes in continuous improvement by learning from mistakes and making changes over time. If a child tries to learn how to read but fails, he will try again until he can do it successfully; this is an example of having a growth mindset because if he gives up then he won’t be able to read (or write) well later on!
The growth mindset is the opposite of a fixed mindset. If you have a growth mindset, you see challenges as opportunities for growth and improvement. You don’t shy away from things that are difficult or might fail; instead, you embrace them because they’re good opportunities to learn something new.
Here’s an example: If you were playing golf with your family and missed the ball entirely on one of your swings, would you give up? Or would you keep trying until it was time to leave? How about when we were kids—did our parents encourage us to learn how to play a sport or instrument by saying “You’re not good enough yet” or did they say “Try again?”
A lot of times when we’re going through challenges and obstacles, the first thing that goes out the window is our self-esteem. We think all the negative things about ourselves.
So, then how do we change that?
How do we go from being so harmful to something more positive? Well, it starts with choosing to embrace a growth mindset over a fixed one. This means accepting that failure can lead us to success if we learn from it and keep working hard. With this approach, there is always room for improvement; always room to get better at something. When you have a growth mindset, you believe that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work; intelligence is not stable or something you are born with but something that can be acquired over time through learning, practice, and experience. When you adopt this mentality, there’s no limit to what you can accomplish!
The first step in changing your mindset is recognizing that a growth mindset is about being open to learning and change. A person with a growth mindset doesn’t think “I am smart” or “I am not smart”—they think “I can learn new things! I want to stretch myself and grow! I want to learn more about this topic! How can I improve my skills? What is one thing I could do today that would help me get better at this? What resources do I need? Where can I find them?”
Another aspect of having a growth mindset is being willing to challenge yourself by trying new things, taking risks, and pushing past your comfort zone. A person with a fixed mindset might say things like: “I’m not good enough” (or worse yet: “My spouse deserves better than me”), whereas someone who has adopted a growth mindset takes action by saying things like: “Okay – so now what?!” They’re willing to try even when they don’t feel ready because they know they will eventually be ready through hard work and practice!
So what have we learned? Well first off, it’s important to embrace a growth mindset. That means being willing to take risks and accept failures as opportunities for learning instead of letting them get us down. It also means believing that there are no limits on what we can accomplish if we set our minds to it! If you want to achieve success in life, it all starts with choosing the right attitude towards yourself and others around you.
