At times we may feel like we are holding ourselves back, or creating mental blocks which stop us from moving forward with our business ideas. In this article, I discuss 5 ways you may self-sabotage and an outlook on how you can change old habits and adopt new ones so your business can prosper!

Negative expectations lead to self-sabotage

• • Instead of saying, “You are assuming the worst,” say: “I know there is a reward at the end of this.”

  • Creating problems in your business that don’t exist. Take control of your to-do list, hire people to help you get stuff done that you’re not sure how to do, and don’t spend too much time trying to figure mundane things out on your own.

  • Instead of saying, “It’s just not going to work,” say “I can’t wait for this to blow up!”

Saying what you don’t want

• • Instead of saying, “I don’t want to fail,” say: “There’s no way this can go wrong.”
  • Instead of saying, “I don’t want to make this mistake,” say: “Making a mistake will help me make better decisions later on.”
  • Instead of saying, “I don’t want to prove other people’s perception that I can’t do this,” say, “I love the people who support me!”

Thoughts around abundance that are preprogrammed

• • Instead of saying, “Money doesn’t grow on trees,” say: “I have an abundance of wealth growing from this idea.”

  • Instead of saying, “That’s too expensive,” say: “I can save up for this.”

  • Instead of saying, “People with money are horrible,” say, “I can’t wait to do good deeds with my wealth.”

  • Instead of saying, “Rich People are greedy,” say: “When I am wealthy, I will do my part to give back my fair share.”

  • Instead of saying, “I am broke,” say: “My budget allows me to grow without overextending myself.”

Speaking negatively about yourself

• • Instead of saying, “I am horrible with this,” say: “I can’t wait to learn more about this.”

  • Instead of saying, “I am bad at sales,” say: “People love me! I can find a coach to help me with this.”

  • Instead of saying, “I don’t have those skills, say: “I’m not prepared to handle this. Let me find someone who can.”

  • Instead of saying, “I can’t afford it,” say: “This will be in my budget in the future.”

Procrastination is the king of self-sabotage

• • Perfectionism is a trait that many of us have and it holds us back a lot of the time. Everything we do DOES NOT have to be perfect. Mistakes are allowed and you should be cautious of how much you beat yourself up over them. Consider telling yourself, “This doesn’t have to be perfect right now. It’s a great start and I’m ready to get feedback on it from someone I trust.”

  • Imposter syndrome is real and may be a huge contributor to why you self-sabotage! Doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud go hand in hand when it comes to business. Instead of telling yourself that you aren’t as competent as you should be, say, “I am so confident in this subject that people are listening and paying me to show them why I am an expert!”
