My name is Laurel Lawshae, and I am 59 years old. I’m a professional violinist, and I’ve spent my life surrounded by music, creativity, and curiosity.
I am passionate about many things, but most of all about learning. I love discovering something new and expanding my understanding of the world. I’m passionate about music, the arts, travel, foreign languages, culture, cooking, sports, and history. There is so much in life to explore, and I never want to stop learning.
My Journey
In 2010, I was first diagnosed with breast cancer. Six years later, in 2016, the cancer became metastatic and spread to the top of my femur. It was a difficult time, and it led to a hip replacement and a metal rod being placed inside my femur.
That chapter taught me patience, something I wish I had understood more deeply when I was first diagnosed. It takes time to receive a clear diagnosis, to create a treatment plan, and to move through the process of healing.
If you are facing this journey, my advice is to be patient and to listen to your body. Rest when you need to. Be kind to yourself as you adjust. There is hope.
A Celebration of Beauty and Confidence
When I heard about the Breast Cancer Patient Giveback photoshoot with Felicia Reed Photography and the Breast Cancer Resource Center, I immediately wanted to be part of it.
For me, it was about joining with other cancer patients to let our inner and outer beauty shine. The session was fun, relaxed, and empowering. It reminded me that I am still radiant, still confident, and still very much myself.
The pampering and encouragement gave us all a boost of self-confidence, and the resulting photos truly reflect that energy.
As a performer, these photos are also valuable for my professional life. They capture not only my image but also my spirit and resilience.
Working with Felicia was a wonderful experience. She is easygoing, kind, and fun to work with, which made the entire session feel effortless.
Seeing Myself Clearly
When I look at these photos, I see more than a reflection. I see my beauty and my personality shining through. For years, I focused on surviving, on making it through each challenge. Now, I can finally see myself thriving again.
If I had to describe myself in one statement, it would be this: I am persistent, and maybe just a little stubborn.
Those qualities have carried me through the hardest seasons and reminded me that strength often shows up quietly, through perseverance and grace.
Advice for Other Women
If you are facing adversity, no matter what form it takes, remember this: have a positive attitude. Take care of yourself. Listen to your body and give it what it needs. And most importantly, let others help you.
You don’t have to do everything alone. There is power in allowing others to show up for you, just as you would for them.
