My Journey with Breast Cancer
My journey began in 2003, but it took a turn for the worse in 2010 when I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer.
I wish I could go back in time and share a piece of advice with my past self: find a support group. Back when I was first diagnosed, I had a terrible experience, and the last thing on my mind was seeking support from others. It wasn’t until my husband passed away that I stumbled upon the Breast Cancer Resource Center and, more specifically, the incredible people in the IV League group.
This group was tailored for those living with metastatic or stage 4 breast cancer. Connecting with others who had walked similar paths, sharing stories, learning from one another, and providing mutual support proved incredibly comforting and powerful. I’ve had the privilege of meeting some of the most amazing individuals who have become lifelong friends.
Words to Live By
One of my favorite sayings that has pushed me out of my comfort zone more than once is, “Do what you can when you can, while you can.” ” Life is precious, and I’ve learned to seize the moment and cherish every bit of it.
The Transformative Photoshoot Experience
This was a truly transformative experience for me. I used to be quite camera-shy, but after my husband’s passing, I realized the value of having cherished photographs to remember our loved ones by. I wanted my girls to have beautiful pictures to remember me and to see that I tried my best to find joy even while living with metastatic breast cancer.
Working with Felicia and Her Team
Working with Felicia and her team was incredible. We laughed, we cried, and we prayed together. The entire morning was so much fun that I didn’t want it to end. I was eager to watch the other fabulous ladies with metastatic breast cancer and witness their transformations, too.
Favorite Captured Moment
My favorite photo from the shoot is the one where I’m wearing a black shirt with my arm hanging off the chair. It captures a moment of vulnerability and strength all at once.
A Lesson in Self-Perception
This experience with Felicia Reed changed the way I see myself. My latest treatment led to hair loss, and I embraced my baldness for the photoshoot. Felicia was so supportive, and I realized that true beauty comes from within. She captured that essence in the photos, and I’m forever grateful for that.
Facing Adversity
My advice to all the incredible women facing adversity is simple: Life is not what is thrown at you but how you respond. We can crawl under a blanket and hide from the world when bad things happen or face them and move forward. There will be days when hiding under the blanket is all you can do (and that is okay), but realize tomorrow is another day to choose to get up and participate in life. Find people in your life who will help you shed the blanket.
